Alberta's Teams in the WHA
(1972-1978)
The Edmonton Oilers never won a World
Hockey Association (WHA) championship; but, thanks to a strong
fan base and a state-of-the-art new arena, the team was
one of the strongest members of the new league.
IIn this section, we will follow the
evolution of the Oilers from 1972-79, and study their
transformation from orange-clad outcasts known as the
Alberta Oilers, to a dominant crew led by Wayne
Gretzky. In addition, articles will examine how Bill
Hunter, a man known as a maverick and visionary,
changed his vision for pro-hockey in Edmonton into a
success story.
Calgary’s
short-lived WHA entry, the Cowboys,
is also examined as a contrast to the success of the
Alberta/Edmonton Oilers.
