The WHA Years (1972-1978)

Canada in the 1970s was marked by an Energy Crisis and Pierre Trudeau’s attempts to make the nation a “just society.” Mullets were all the rage, and the kids either danced to disco or were into that loud, noisy, new style of music that was simply known as “punk.”

The era was known for political change and shocking fashion. It was an also a revolutionary time in the world of pro hockey. A rebel league, the World Hockey Association (WHA), had formed—and it would bring an exciting brand of the game to both Edmonton and Calgary.

Featuring a mix of brawlers, young phenoms and aging superstars, the WHA was a hit in Edmonton, and paved the way for the National Hockey League to make inroads into the province at the end of the decade.
