Highlights of the Dynasty Years
(1984-1990)
From 1984 to 1990, the Edmonton Oilers
were rarely out of the headlines. Th e team that had showed so
much promise during the early 1980s, finally become
champions in 1984; a feat they would repeat four more
times by the beginning of the new decade.
However, the Stanley Cup victories
included two very bitter moments. During the 1986
playoffs, the
Calgary Flames upset the Oilers,
removing hope of matching the Montréal Canadiens' record
of five Cups in a row. This was followed in 1988, when owner Peter
Pocklington’s waning fortunes forced him to instruct
general manager and president Glen Sather
to trade Wayne
Gretzky, the best player of all time.
From the Stanley Cup victories to the
bitter losses of playoffs and players, the National Hockey League
will never see a repeat of the Oilers era. In this section, featured articles will include
the
glories and the heartbreaks of the greatest hockey
dynasty Alberta has ever seen.
