Player Profiles (1950-1971)
Throughout most of the ‘50s and ‘60s,
Canadians gathered around their radios, black-and-white
televisions or at the local arena to celebrate the game
of hockey on their Saturday nights.
For Edmontonians, there were many
local heroes—men like Al Rollins, Al Arbour, Norm Ullman,
Glenn Hall and John Bucyk; players who would all star in the NHL
after playing for the Edmonton Flyers.
But there were plenty of non-NHL
heroes too; men like Leo LeClerc and Clare Drake who worked
to build the amateur hockey scene in the city.
In a time before colour TV and the
Internet brought the game into our homes 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, black-and-white
heroes invaded television sets across the country.
They were a reminder of a hopeful time when oil was new
and the war was over.
