Edmonton Mercurys
Sponsored by the local Waterloo
Motors dealership, the Edmonton Mercurys became local
heroes. Thier first championship occured in 1950, when they won the International
Ice Hockey Federation’s World Championships in London.
Two years later, the team made an even bigger
impression, winning
Olympic gold in Oslo, Norway. The 1952 Mercurys won
seven of their eight games at the Olympic tournament,
and scored at least 11 goals in five of their games,
including a 15-1 rout of West Germany and an 11-0
thrashing of Poland. A 3-3 tie with the Americans in the
final game of the tournament was all the Mercurys needed
for gold.
