Alberta in the Memorial Cup
Even though the National Hockey League came to
Alberta in 1979, the province’s appetite for major
junior hockey did not wane. New
franchises like the Calgary Hitmen and Red Deer Rebels
have flourished in the Western Hockey League, while the
Medicine Hat Tigers won back-to-back Memorial Cups in
1987 and 1988, led by native son Trevor Linden.
The Rebels won the Memorial Cup in 2001, becoming the
fourth Alberta franchise—after the Tigers, Calgary
Canadians and Edmonton Oil Kings—to snatch the top honour in junior hockey.
