University of Alberta Golden Bears—A.D.
(After Drake)
The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club was
not the only local organization going through major
changes in the 1990s. The University of Alberta entered
the post-Clare
Drake era in 1989, and the school needed to prove that they could keep the Golden Bears’
reputation intact. The transition was accomplished, as the Bears won
three more national championships since Drake’s
retirement, the last two under coach Rob Daum. Drake may
have built the Bears into the
best
collegiate hockey program in Canada, but the men's
hockey program proved they could excel without him.
