General Managers

In 1977, Glen Sather of High River, Alberta, rose to the challenge of being a player-coach. through the leadership skills that he presented, he rapidly rose to the position of general manager. In 1996, Kevin Lowe returned to a much different Oilers team than he had played with from 1979-1992. Edmonton was dealing with the economic realities of a small-market franchise and there was even danger of losing the franchise. Like Sather, Lowe would become a coach first and then a general manager. While Sather has already left his legacy, Lowe has just begun. To date, the Oilers have named only 4 people to the position of GM but all are linked by their "franchise-first" philosophy. All have dealt with making tough personnel decisions, balancing the team’s payroll and the high expectations of icing a competitive and entertaining team in the heartland of hockey. Join us in this section as we explore the lives and careers of these four extraordinary individuals and their unique contributions to the shape and legacy of the Edmonton Oilers.
