Record Breakers
The Edmonton Oiler teams of the eighties were powerhouses. Opposing
teams could not
stand their ground, nets were scored on at will, and Oiler
players fed off the energy from teammates and fans.
Plays were designed around the offense because no other
team could match their skills. Nightly, Edmonton teams were finding ways to re-write
the record book
-
Most goals in one period by both
teams: 12, Edmonton Oilers 6, Chicago Blackhawks 6,
Dec 11, 1985.
-
Most goals in one game by both
teams: 21, Edmonton Oilers 12, Chicago Blawkhawks 9,
at Chicago, Dec 11, 1985
No one in the league was safe from
the Oiler offense. Teams feared to host the Oilers or
worse, play them at Northlands Colosieum. Each team in the NHL had to play Edmonton at least once
during the regular season,
and knew the game would be a high scoring
affair. Eighty games or eighty-two, in a season, Edmonton
would rack up the points and break the records
-
Highest goals per game average, one
season: 5.58, Edmonton Oilers 1983-84
-
Short handed goals, one season: 36,
Edmonton Oilers 1983-84
-
Most 50 goal scorers, one team
(tied): 3, Edmonton Oilers 1983-84 and Edmonton Oilers
1985-86
The regular season was one thing, but
the post season is where the Oilers excelled. The quest
for Lord Stanley’s Cup means everything to an NHL
player. After the series loss to 1983 cup champion New
York Islander, the Oilers realized that more sacrifice,
determination, and spirit were needed to win the Holy
Grail. More goals would need to be added too
-
Most shorthanded goals, one team,
one playoffs: 10, Edmonton Oilers, 1983
-
Most goals, one team, one playoff
series: 44, Edmonton Oilers 1985 Campbell Conference final against the
Chicago Blackhawks.
Backed by exceptional play, the
Edmonton Oilers have gone on to win five Stanley cups.
The reason: great players who had one amazing season
after another. The offense categories in the NHL record
books are a testament to great Oiler players
-
Most goals by a defensemen, one
season: 48, Paul Coffey, 1985-86
-
Most goals, career: 894, Wayne
Gretzky
-
Most goals, career, including
playoffs: , 1016, Wayne Gretzky
-
Most points, career: 2857 Wayne
Gretzky
-
Most points, career, including
playoffs: 3239, Wayne Gretzky
One special team. That is what
defines the Edmonton Oilers. Records that stood for
years were broken by a former Oiler or by the entire
team. Looking at the records and seeing the state of the
game today, one realizes that these records will stand
for a long time.
